Today, on the south bank of Lake Geneva, one of the greatest meeting places for women's golf and its venue have the same name - Evian Masters. This is the climax of a story which started way back in 1904. At the start of the 20th century, Evian lived from its production of mineral water which was known all over the world. The Danone Group was something in the distant future. However, it was already known that this corner of the Haute-Savoie, rising from the banks of Lake Geneva, had a promising future with the opening of the Royal Hotel which became the famous Royal Parc Evian and a nine-hole course on the present site. They had to wait another eighteen years before the course expanded to 18 holes. For many years, the Evian course had a sort of pastoral atmosphere, almost like a Renoir painting. Suddenly, Evian became well-known with many political meetings putting it squarely on the map and its bottles of mineral water ensured the name was promoted all over the world. For Franck Riboud, who started in Evian, this success was certainly welcome but not enough. He had another vision which was a combination of women and golf. In 1988, he asked Cabell Robinson to redesign a state-of-the-art golf course so that he could put on first-rate tournaments. Cabell had worked for some time for Robert Trent Jones Sr. Under the Jones cachet, he contributed to beautiful courses such as the glorious Sperone in France. Hidden behind his enormous moustache, he has given birth to a new course on top of the routing of the old one. The difference is striking. Then the greenkeeper, Yannick Le Hec, arrived at Royal Evian (this was its name before the turn of the century). We prefer the term "superintendent" which sounds better. He understood the ideas of the golfing landscaper and included some of his own which have been approved of by Franck Riboud. He is currently managing the club. Now that the venue is about to host the 16th Evian Masters, the original course is hardly recognisable especially since for the week of the tournament, the holes will be played in a different order. No.1 (333 metres) is in fact No.14 and No.6 (353 metres) replaces the original No.1. The old clients are probably lost but the golf show in front of the club house will be magnificent. Between the waterfall and the massive flora, No.18, a 435 meter par 5 will award the bravest. This is a superb end to this par 72 (5'708 metres) which has ceaselessly expanded gaining more than 100 metres since 2002. The ladies of the Evian Masters adore this course which enhances their game mixing power with finesse. The Evian Masters Golf Club is remarkable for this fact alone.
